Treak Cliff Cavern’s Geology

Treak Cliff Cavern is a site of special scientific interest in the Peak District National Park in England. It is the only place in the world where the mineral, Blue John, can be found.

In 2017 Treak Cliff Cavern began work with the interpretation agency, inHeritage, to develop educational materials for the visitors of the site. As part of the project Mair Perkins Ltd Animation and Illustration created an animation and comic book to explain the history of the site to visitors.

We successfully condensed over 300 million years into 4:16 minutes of video!

Production Process

The clients supplied us with a timeline, list of possible visuals and learning materials to show in each time period. We then developed concept art and storyboards based on the supplied information and our own research.

We spent the majority of the project’s time in pre-production to ensure the messages were understandable and clear for the general public. Treak Cliff Cavern, the interpretation agency and geologists all gave input and advice in the pre-production to ensure accuracy.

The animation was created using a mixture of Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Animate and Adobe After Effects.

The music and sound effects were composed and produced by Haynes Music Productions. We deliberately avoided using a voiceover so the video can also function silently.

What the client said

Once again, it has been a real pleasure to work with Mair on making a fast-moving, funny and content-rich animation and comic full of complex information for a members of the public visiting the cavern. It is easy to relax into the process with Mair as she reliably produces great work on-schedule with clear communication along the way. I look forward to more collaborations.
