About

mair_perkins

Hello, I’m Mair and I’ve been making pictures since I could hold a crayon but I’ve been running my animation and illustration business since 2011.

I was born in the UK but lived in New Zealand for a while when I was young. My family moved back to the UK to County Durham in the North then in 2006 when I moved to Derby to study animation at University. In Derby I made friends, met my husband, adopted some cats and started my business so settled here. Though we married in Vegas!

Derby is a small city in the East Midlands with all the history, culture and amenities of a city but just a stone’s throw away from beautiful rolling countryside and the Peak District National Park (who I made an animation for!). Derby is also just a 90 minute train journey away from London.

I’ve always been interested in telling stories, sharing knowledge and problem solving through pictures (probably because of all the cartoons, films, video games, comics and illustrated books I absorbed as a child in the 90’s).

I absolutely love what I do and after a few years, I still wake up super excited each day to begin creating.

I’m a hands on, independent creative business owner. So I’m experienced with idea generation, script writing, storyboarding, art direction, character design, illustration, animation production and all the project management, communication and organisational stuff that goes with that (I’m rather fond of writing and ticking off to-do lists).

Not only do I thoroughly enjoy working on the artistic, technical and management parts of projects but clients are able to deal directly with the creative person producing their project. So it’s a win-win!

You may notice in my portfolio that many of my projects are for social or environmental causes. I love the idea that public awareness can be raised and positive change can be made through visual storytelling. I’ve won some awards related to this too.

On occasion I hire other talented, local folk on a per project basis. Sometimes for animation assistance but mostly for voice overs, music production and sound effects.

Contact me if you’d like to talk over your project or just to say hello.

How do you pronounce your name?

"Mair" is a Welsh form of Mary and it's pronounced "My - ah". My Grandpa was Welsh and my family has a lot of Celtic named members. We often joke that our family gatherings sound like a Lord of the Rings council meeting.

I set up my business as Mair Perkins but then I married my wonderful partner, Callum, and wanted to adopt his surname. For simplicity and consistency I still lead my professional life as Mair Perkins. Feel free to call me by Perkins or Bain!
